Big Show Coming!
UpFront Exhibition space owners Debbie Raia and Gordon Graff will be hosting their Fall Artist Reception on Saturday, October 10, 2015, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at their space on Jersey Avenue in Port Jervis.
The evening promises to be packed with local artists and will also include renowned painter John Barns Dobbs.
From his bio:
“Dobbs studied in the early 1950s at the Brooklyn (New York) Museum Art School, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine; he also studied with Gregorio Prestopino, Ben Shahn, and Jack Levine. Since his first exhibition was mounted by the Grippi Gallery in New York in 1959.
“Dobbs’s work has frequently been seen in one-man shows in New York galleries, and also in exhibitions presented by galleries in Paris, Los Angeles, and Edgartown, Massachusetts. Among his publications are Drawings of a Draftee, 1960 (New York: Broad Axe Press), and illustrations for a volume of poems by Harry Brander, What Rhymes with Cancer, 1982 (New York: New Rivers Press).
“Dobbs taught at the Brooklyn Museum School from 1956 to 1959 and at the New School for Social Research, New York, 1964 to 1972. Since 1972 has been a member of the faculty of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York, attaining the rank of full professor in 1983. The Academy has awarded him the Proctor Prize, 1974; an Altman Prize, 1978; the Sawyer Prize, 1983; and the Grumbacher Prize, 1989, for paintings shown in annual exhibitions. He served on the Academy Council, 1984–87.
“John Barnes Dobbs, a determinedly figurative painter who launched his career in the 1950s against the prevailing winds of Abstract Expressionism, lived to see a time when Realism would coexist with Abstraction, Minimalism, Conceptual Art and a variety of other artistic movements. On August 9 Dobbs died at his home in New York’s Greenwich Village at the age of 80.”
In addition to Dobbs’ work, UpFront Exhibition Space will also be hosting numerous other artists and photographers on October 10. Raia indicated that she is still working on the roster.
“We are very excited to be hosting Mr. Dobbs work. For years I’ve admired his paintings and to have him here in Port Jervis is a real honor. Many of our artists who have shown here for years will be returning, as will several new to our space,” said Raia.
